From 1973 to 1998 Ernesto Carafoli has been full Professor of Biochemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). Calcium was his main research area. He retired October 1, 1998.



Born on October 14, 1932 in Sedegliano, Italy. M.D. degree in 1957, University of Modena, Italy. NIH postdoctoral fellow, Dept. of Physiological Chemistry, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA (1963-1965). Visiting lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, Assistant Professor, Institute of General Pathology, University of Modena (1959-1965), Associate Professor (1965-1973). Professor of Biochemistry, ETH Zurich (1973-1998). Professor of Biochemistry, University of Padova, Italy, (1990).



The most important awards acknowledging his work have been a medal from the International Society for Heart Research (1976), a Fogarty Scholar in Residence Award, by the National Institute of Health, Bethesda, USA, 1985-1989. He is a member of the Academia Europea. (1990) Doctor Honoris Causa in Natural and Mathematical Sciences, University of åbo, Finland (1993), Doctor in Medicine Honoris Causa, Carol Davila University, Bucharest, Rumania (1995), Doctor in Medicine and Pharmacy Honoris Causa, University of Clui, Rumanie (1998), honorary member of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, member of the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (Rome) and member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO), member of scientific committees of several European agencies and institutions. He was also president of the International Cell Research Organisation (ICRO).
