Three times the fees for foreign students: implementation approved

The ETH Board has decided to implement the fee increase for foreign students as of the autumn semester of 2025. At the same time, it has defined the transitional regulations for students who began their studies before that date.

From the autumn semester of 2025, students who move to Switzerland to study will pay three times as much in tuition fees as their Swiss peers. This was external page decided by the ETH Board at its meeting on 5 December. Exempt from this increase are foreign students who were resident in Switzerland or the Principality of Liechtenstein at the time of acquiring their university entrance qualification (Matur).

Higher fees also for students transferring to a Master's degree programme

Those who started their studies before the autumn semester of 2025 will continue to pay the old fees. However, this only applies until they complete their Bachelor's or Master's degree. Transferring from a Bachelor's to a Master's programme is considered to be starting a new degree programme, and the fees triple.

Rector Günther Dissertori informed all students of ETH Zurich about the ETH Board's decision by e-mail. Since the new fees are likely to raise questions among many students, the rectorate will hold an information event at the beginning of the spring semester. Further information is available on the ETH Zurich website.

Adjustment of tuition fees to inflation

At the same time as the increase in fees for foreign students, the ETH Board decided to take inflation into account in the tuition fees. In future, the fees will be adjusted every four years in line with the Swiss consumer price index.
