What will it feel like to research, teach, study and work at a climate-neutral ETH Zurich? With the launch of the "ETH net zero" programme, all ETH members are on a major expedition together towards an ambitious goal. The message: "All for zero 2030".

Over the last months, laboratories at ETH had the opportunity to participate in the GreenLabs pilot and drive sustainability efforts in their lab practices. End of January 2024, the first certification ceremony of the pilot took place, awarding 19 labs for their progress. ETH GreenLabs will be further rolled out with the goal to review all labs at ETH.

In mid-December, climate researchers from ETH gathered in the CHN building for the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union. Although the event took place in the United States, there was no shortage of stimulating conversations and debates, nor informal exchanges over coffee.

The third edition of the ETH Sustainability Summit, organized by ETH Sustainability and the Student Sustainability Committee, brought together over 70 engaged individuals from more than 30 initiatives. They met to get to know each other, network and celebrate successes in the Dozentenfoyer above the city rooftops.

At the end of September, the consultation process for the draft roadmap "ETH Net Zero" came to an end. ETH Sustainability draws a positive conclusion with over 250 participations and around 500 constructive comments and remarks.

We aim for our printer landscape to be sustainable and cost-efficient. Currently, around 1800 trees are used up by printing at ETH every year and 80 tons of greenhouse gas emissions are emitted. It is interesting to note that a personal printer has a three times greater impact on the environment than an infrastructure printer. Therefore, it is time to act!

Autumn 2023 is marked by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, not only in New York due to the SDG Summit but also in Zurich because of the grand and visible open your eyes photo festival. Until October 15th, hundreds of photographs on the topic of sustainable development can be admired in the city center of Zurich. Simultaneously, projects and innovations by ETH scientists are being presented.

smart moves is the campaign for sustainable mobility behaviour at ETH Zurich 2023, and the nationwide mobility challenge comes at just the right time. The draft roadmap "ETH Net Zero" is available. For the first time, it formulates the system boundaries and target values of ETH Zurich on its way to becoming a climate-friendly university. We invite the ETH members to comment on the roadmap and to help shape and support the path towards net zero: Every contribution counts!

In the Sustainable Gastronomy Project, the restaurants are working on making the food on campus environmentally friendly, healthy and socially just. Now the interim review shows: the measures taken by the caterers are quantifiably effective.

In the heart of the city of Zurich, world-class science will meet world-class photography from 8 September 2023. Together, they are creating a new format for communication. The focus is on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations: A multinational compass for the development of a more peaceful and just world. ETH Zurich has set itself the goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2030. Since the procurement and use of laboratory equipment have a significant environmental impact, employees are critically reviewing their laboratory practices. For a “Green Labs” pilot project to promote resource-saving laboratory operations, ETH Zurich is looking for committed employees and working groups.

ETH Zurich wants to achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. In order to reach this ambitious goal, an action plan for Net Zero is now being developed in a broad process.

With World Vegetarian Day coming up this Saturday, ETH Zurich will be celebrating Veggie Week until Friday, 30 September, with vegetarian delicacies at our campus restaurants. Trying new things is encouraged!

Digital meeting point, flea market and events calendar – the newly launched ETH community platform “Point” is all this and more. The goal of the platform is to bring ETH members together across team boundaries and hierarchies, and also to anchor the issue of sustainability within the community.

Most ETH Zurich canteens and restaurants will be offering meals in reCIRCLE reusable containers as of 14 September, just in time for the start of the autumn semester.

ETH already maintains a strong international position in terms of campus sustainability. With the ETH Climate Programme, another important element will be added to this topic: it aims to significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions caused by catering at ETH.
