This briefing paper presents the results of a 2005 survey conducted in Malawi, focusing on government responsiveness and accountability. The authors find that there is a gap between expectations and practice. Malawians want their Members of Parliament (MPs) to visit their constituency frequently, and to be responsive to their needs - however, this is not what is occurring. The authors conclude that as there is the possibility for Malawians to vote unresponsive MPs out of office, with time and experience it can be hoped that elected officials will become more responsive and accountable to the people they serve.
