This briefing paper presents the results of a 2005 survey conducted in Zimbabwe on what citizens saw as the most important problems facing the country. The top three responses were food shortages, the state of the economy and unemployment. The authors suggest that adults are too preoccupied with simply surviving to worry about governance, human rights or corruption. The authors conclude that most Zimbabweans are deeply unhappy with the performance of the government and very pessimistic about the future. Moreover, most of the blame for the problems the country faces is placed squarely on the government.
