This briefing paper presents the results of a 2005 Afrobarometer survey conducted in Zimbabwe about the demand, supply and support for democracy and democratic institutions. The authors discuss the finding that two-thirds of the respondents were in favor of democracy as well as issues of conceptual illiteracy thought to be behind the "don't know" response. The paper also examines the rejection of authoritarian and one-party rule, the high level of support for democratic elections and the respondents' assessment of the supply of democracy in Zimbabwe. The authors conclude that that there is a firm moral preference for democracy and that Zimbabweans are unhappy with the state of democracy at the time of the survey.
