This publication provides an overview of the extensive research on the technological, environmental and social aspects of biofuel production and trade, in order to identify the potential opportunities and limitations associated with large-scale biofuel production. It gives a summary of biofuel technology and production potential as well as government policies supporting possible expansion. The paper then addresses sustainable development issues before reviewing initiatives to design biofuel certification schemes. It concludes with recommendations on how to advance a sustainable biofuel agenda.
