This paper explores questions surrounding the application of restorative justice, particularly of victim offender conferencing (VOC) in the context of domestic violence in South Africa. It explores these issues by locating restorative justice within a context of the high prevalence of domestic violence in South Africa. It explores the inter-relationship between VOC and the objectives of the Domestic Violence Act and the effectiveness of VOC in cases of domestic violence, particularly in relation to issues of safety, the needs of the victim and the extent to which VOC assists in preventing further violence.
