This paper explores the role of memorialization - the construction and perpetuation of public memory - in transitional justice. It assesses evaluation methodologies for memorialization sites and looks at the links between memorialization and transitional justice in Argentina, Chile and South Africa. Documentary and field research, and discussions held at a working group hosted by the Center for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) inform the paper.
