This paper looks at migrant remittances to and within Africa, exploring the link with the microfinance industry as a provider of money transfer or ancillary financial services to remittances. It examines the transfer services which microfinance institutions (MFIs) provide and discusses the opportunities and challenges of such services for MFIs. The author discusses remittance flows and analyzes the business potential for money transfer services for remittances. She highlights the business opportunity for MFIs and provides a review framework for the uptake of money transfers services.
