This paper examines remittances and their contribution to economic development by focusing on issues surrounding the use of financial services. It looks at remittance flows, transaction costs, related regulations and policies, the developmental effects of remittances, and the impact of trends and donor interests. The author highlights that remittances are the second largest capital flow behind foreign direct investment (FDI), ahead of overseas development assistance (ODA).
