This issue explores political, economic and cultural developments in Macau since retrocession to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in December 1999. It examines, among others, the role of the casino industry in legitimizing and delegitimizing the politico-administrative state in Macau, describes the transformation of Macau’s urban image since retrocession, considers Macau's tourism industry, and examines the implications of the cross-border activities of Macau's residents. The issue also assesses the China narrative in leading German daily and weekly newspapers during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games and probes China's statistical system.
