This policy brief examines why deforestation occurs and the impact it has on the environment, as well as examining policies to reduce it. The paper notes that the pressures to deforest come from the wider economy, with poor governance and insecure land ownership hindering attempts to reduce deforestation. It outlines policies to reduce deforestation both in terms of affecting demand for timber, as well as supply.
