This policy brief explains the reading process and the underlying basis of specific reading difficulties as well summarizing different methods of reading instruction in the context of current and future policy. It assesses the UK's National Literacy Strategy before looking at the National Curriculum more broadly. It provides suggestions as to how children with reading difficulties could be helped to improve their linguistic and decoding skills.
