This publication debates the inclusion of environmental safeguards in free trade agreements. Advocates of environmental provisions highlight the strong correlation between trade and the environment, fearing an increase in environmental degradation if adequate safeguards are not included. This study discusses the truth of such claims. It ends with numbers of recommendations aiming at motivating developing countries to cope with the environmental standards that are incorporated in the free trade agreements.
