This paper examines the lack of reservists in the UK armed forces, together with the trend towards a growing need for augmentees. According to the author, the challenge for the UK Ministry of Defence is maintaining a strong enough flow of volunteers coming into the system to keep numbers and standards at the right level – without resorting to conscription. He makes recommendations as to how this can be achieved.
