Pundits have declared "competitiveness" the buzzword of the 1990s (although "globalization" may have the edge). In fact, the competitiveness buzz started earlier, to the point that by 1987 people in the know in Washington, DC, coyly referred to it only as the "c-word" because hoi polloi had started using it.
