Currently, only very limited cooperation on water use in the Amu Darya Basin exists. As the regional population rises and economic demands in the basin increase, the riparian countries are concerned they will need more water – but may get less. Due to climate change, the river’s seasonal flow has already become erratic and may diminish. Now more than ever, to prevent future conflict on water, this paper argues that the Amu Darya Basin needs effective mechanisms for cooperative transboundary water management.
