This paper examines the Russian perspective on the Arctic, looking at the historical record, as well as examining the general importance of the Arctic to contemporary Russia. The author assesses Russia’s general strategic policy towards the Arctic, Russia’s defense and security interests in the area, and the potential economic impact of further development of the Northern Sea Route.
