The contributions to this special issue deal with the implementation of public environmental protection policies in China. This focus is well chosen, since rapid economic development in China during the last four decades has had its price in terms of environmental deterioration. The aim is not to monitor a special policy cycle but instead to review local implementation practices in various locations.
