This paper provides a broad survey of Islam and violent conflict in the North Caucasus in the period beginning with the introduction of Islam to the area up until the current conflict in Chechnya. It questions some of the conventional historical assumptions about the relationship between Islam and violent conflict in the North Caucasus which observers often adopt in their analyses.
