This paper addresses the relationship between intellectual property and biodiversity in the context of bilateral trade agreements between developed and developing countries. It identifies the ways in which intellectual property rules can either enhance or diminish efforts to meet the three objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD): to conserve biodiversity, sustainably use biological resources, and share the benefits resulting from their use.
