This paper examines the increasing competition over resources and the variety of ways in which this trend will engender local and international discord. As the world population and the number of people living "affluent" lifestyles increases, greater competition over resources is highly probable and an increasingly humanitarian issue. The paper argues that it is crucial that Southern perspectives feed into the process of reshaping the economy and energy security infrastructure to meet basic human needs.
