The importance of geographical indications (GIs) as a concept of rural development is growing steadily. Recent years have witnessed legislative changes, and the registration and commercial development of GIs in a number of biologically-diverse developing countries as well in developed countries. At the same time, there continues to be a lively debate about the actual impact of GIs on environmental conservation and rural development. This information note looks at current trends in GIs as they relate to biodiversity conservation and rural development, and their potential contributions to poverty, hunger alleviation and environmental goals.
