In this essay, the possibility for Russian influence to manifest itself as a neo-imperial power in Central Asia is assessed. The author argues that the relevance of Russia to the Central Asian republics is based not only on the colonial legacy, but on enduring factors of geography, demographics, military power, and economics. The author also advises the United States not to become the guarantor of Central Asian security, either against Russia or any other state.
