The aim of this monograph is to extend the knowledge of the contemporary Middle East, military history, an Iraqi military effectiveness during the course of three major wars: the Iran-Iraq War; the First Gulf War, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The first part is an overview essay that summarizes the major insights derived from the totality of discussion contained in the second part, based on interviews with figures significant in the Ira-Iraq War, extensive examination and study of captured Iraqi records. The main themes are: the growth of Iraqi intelligence capabilities; the growth of Saddam’s perceptions on the nature of war, the development of Iraqi military doctrine; the lack of a clear strategic or operational; vision among Iraq’s leaders; and difficulties the Iraqis confronted in incorporating technology into military organizations.
