This paper discusses the situation of the Kurdish population in countries including Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Israel. For decades, Israel has been reluctant to support any manifestation of Kurdish independence. But at a time when nation-states are losing their exclusive claim to represent the peoples of the Middle East, the author argues, it would be a mistake to confine Israel’s diplomatic contacts to nation-states alone.
