In July 2004, the Kennan Institute and the Asia Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center convened a conference to examine the evolving relationships among the countries of Northeast Asia, namely Russia, China, Japan, and North and South Korea, with an eye toward understanding the growing importance of energy in the region. The conference assessed the changing relationship between Russia and its Asian neighbors, and analyzed the general geostrategic and geopolitical landscape of Northeast Asia. The proceedings of the conference provide an overview and a recap of papers presented and themes discussed at the gathering.
