This issue of the Journal of Chinese Affairs focuses on democracy in Taiwan and its relations with the Chinese mainland. Articles discuss the extent of political polarization in society, the liberal discourse on the democratization process, the impact of the 2004 electoral system reform and Taiwan’s elections of 2012. Other pieces examine the presidential rhetoric towards China and the prospect of closer integration between Taiwan and China.
