This issue of the International Journal of the Commons is the first part of a special feature on multi-level governance of forests. The articles included address different aspects and shapes of multi-level governance such as polycentric governance, multi-scale governance, decentralization and devolution. Other articles address aspects that influence the effectiveness of governance regimes such as adaptive capacity, property rights, power imbalances and norms and values. The issue finally includes several book reviews and an analysis of the institutional arrangements that help teach undergraduates about the commons in Thailand.
