Japan's politics is currently focused on the issue of whether or not to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), a free trade agreement (FTA) that would abolish the tariffs protecting Japanese agricultural products. In this article the author addresses why has Japan been pursuing regional trade strategies centered on the FTA/TPP instead of relying solely on bilateral FTAs and what are the factors that promote or hinder Japanese participation in the TPP.
