This brief assesses the status of dispute-management efforts surrounding the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands and considers policy options for the United States. The author claims that there is a considerable amount that the US can do to discourage deliberate escalation of the dispute, even if it can do little to directly ensure a peaceful resolution.
