This brief talks about the work of the UN chemical weapons inspection team in Syria in August 2013. It provides an overview of the situation in Syria, the chemical warfare agents, and the detection procedure of the inspection team. The authors conclude that the 21 August 2013 chemical weapons attack in Ghouta, Syria, was on a scale not seen since the Iraqi air force used such weapons against the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988.
