This media briefing looks at the incorrect assessments and inaccurate speculations in the media coverage of the 2011 Anders Brevik attacks in Norway and at how prejudiced reporting can be avoided in the future. After describing how journalists mistakenly blamed the attacks on Islamic terrorists, the author identifies several interrelated psychological processes that can lead to wrong assessments. He concludes that such conjecture unnecessarily perpetuates prejudices against the suspected community.
