This paper provides a historical overview of the Korean wartime operation control (OPCOM) and explores the implications of its transition from Combined Forces Command (CFC) to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) for the South Korean-US alliance. It also discusses the background of the South Korean Park administration’s request that the US should take a leadership position in the defense of South Korea. The paper concludes with policy recommendations.
