This brief examines how ASEAN has tried to adapt to China’s rise as a security actor in Asia. Thus far, its dual approach is a familiar one – i.e., deepen economic ties with Beijing and integrate it more thoroughly into existing regional institutions. In doing so, ASEAN hopes to 1) make China a stakeholder in regional stability, 2) prevent it from dominating regional affairs, and 3) maintain a transnational focus in East Asian security affairs.
