This report presents a new estimate of global spending on health research and development for 2001. The report exposes major gaps in the availability of data from all health research funding sectors, disease-specific information, and the measure of determinants such as poverty, inequity, and gender. The main questions discussed concern the growth in funding levels, the share of spending from public, private, and not-for-profit sources, adequate responses to health problems of poor populations, and the reduction of global health inequities.
