This paper discusses the benefits of creating an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the implications such a move would have for economic regionalism and trade liberalization. It first briefly reviews ASEAN’s efforts at economic cooperation prior to the establishment of the AEC and then examines the AEC’s strategies for promoting trade liberalization, taking political and ASEAN-specific considerations into account. The paper concludes with a discussion of the policy implications of the AEC for South Korea.
