This brief examines the international military interventions in the Sahel and the impact they have had on the security situation in the region. The author argues that the use of foreign military resources and tactics may actually bolster radicalism and risks a local backlash, as does the increasing reliance on French and US backing by some of the region’s authoritarian regimes.
