This commentary provides an interpretation of Kim Jong-un’s 2014 New Year’s address in order to provide insight into the North Korean leader's objectives and strategies for 2014. The author first analyzes the structure and different components of the address. He then goes on to identify underlying contradictions in the objectives set in the message. Finally, he offers his perspective regarding the policies both North and South Korea should pursue in order to achieve development and peace.
