This commentary discusses the state of South Korea-Japan relations in the aftermath of a meeting between the countries' leaders at a trilateral summit with US President Obama in March 2014. The author argues that while Japan and South Korea reaffirmed their trilateral cooperation on security issues concerning North Korea at the meeting, strained relations between the two countries remain. He then analyzes some of the main reasons for these tensions and how the two countries perceptions of each other cause strains in their ties with each other. Finally, he outlines steps that could help normalize relations between the two.
