This paper analyzes the influence of domestic politics on US-China trade disputes over solar energy. In particular, it seeks to explain why the US has had such little success in pressuring China into modifying its trade practices in this sector (namely, by lifting its market access barriers). Overall, the author argues that this is explained by domestic opposition in the US from businesses in the solar industry to US trade action in combination with Beijing’s strong defense of a strategic emerging industry.
