This journal contains several articles on the local politics in Jakarta. Some of the contributions show the peculiarities of Jakartan politics, while others identify similarities with other local politics in Indonesia. Each article provides an analysis of the key factors affecting Jakartan politics, such as the unique local government institution, the (dis)continuing significance of horizontal social cleavages of religion and ethnicity; the rise of populism; and political volunteerism. It also includes two book reviews.
