This paper examines why there are so few 'effective and respected' militaries in Africa. It first identifies the fundamental principles behind military professionalism and what’s impeding their implementation on the continent. Then, the paper discusses what African countries should do to reverse these problems, including identifying clear missions for their militaries, overseeing their activities more rigorously, and overcoming the adversarial relationship that exists between most soldiers and citizens.
