This paper provides an overview of the political situation in Guinea Bissau in the run up to the country’s April 2014 national elections. It also 1) provides a brief review of the country’s political history since its independence in 1974; 2) describes the key factors that drive political instability in the country; 3) discusses the prospects for economic and social transition in the country following the 2014 elections; and 4) outlines scenarios for how the political and security situation in the country could develop following the elections.
