This fact file provides an overview of Iran’s heavy water moderated research reactor, the IR-40, which was under construction until January 2014 when work was stopped under the terms of the Joint Plan of Action. In particular, the author discusses Iran’s stated purpose for the reactor, heavy water research reactors in general, the state of construction of the IR-40, the component parts of the reactor, and the facilities needed to support the IR-40.
