This study examines the implementation and impact in Tanzania of India’s Duty-Free Trade Preference (DFTP) scheme, which provides least developed countries (LDC) a duty-free and quota-free access to the country’s markets. The authors contend that the scheme has had a positive but limited effect in stimulating the export of products to India due to a number of reasons, including a lack of awareness of the scheme among Tanzanian exporters; problems in Tanzania’s trade policy toward the scheme; and perceptions among private and public sector actors of India’s market. They also provide policy recommendations on how India and Tanzania can enhance the effectiveness of the scheme.
