This brief examines the effectiveness of the Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS) Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which was adopted to address the root causes of conflicts in West Africa. The authors contend that while the Supplementary Protocol does provide a platform for the management of transitional governance in West Africa, there are a number of problems it has to face, including the inappropriate prolonging of political tenures, the rejecting of electoral results and more. Given these difficulties, the brief concludes that ECOWAS members may want to review the Protocol sooner than later.
