This article discusses the newly-established volunteer structures assisting Ukrainian soldiers in their fight against pro-Russian separatists in East Ukraine. The author contends that while this volunteering reflects the limited capabilities and governance issues within the Ukrainian army it also highlights that there is some solidarity among many people in supporting the government in Kyiv. However, she also questions the sustainability of the volunteer support and whether the military will be able to shift away from its reliance on volunteer structures in future conflicts.
