This paper provides an overview the three broad areas of contention in East Asia's ongoing maritime disputes: sovereignty, boundary delimitation, and sovereign rights disputes. The author then examines how maritime rivalry between the US and China acts as a constraint on South Korea's middle power diplomacy. He also suggests ways in which East Asia's maritime disputes could be resolved multilaterally.
